Visiting Indian Lok Sabha member Abhijit Mukherjee, also the son of Indian president Pranab Mukherjee, on Sunday said he does not think that the attacks on minorities what Bangladesh is witnessing in recent times is being carried out for religious reason.
“The Muslims are coming under attacks, too. A quarter is carrying out these attacks to fulfill their own purpose. It is an ill effort to sour the relations in the name of religion. We must ignore it,” said Abhijit Mukherjee while talking to newsmen after a reception programme organised by Bangladesh-India Friendship Society in the capital’s New Eskaton.
Dwelling on the western perception that the Middle-East based international militant outfit Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant aka ISIL aka ISIS is behind these attacks, the Indian politician said, “None should be blamed before investigation.”
He underscored the need for prompt action shortly after the incidents to contain such attacks.
He also praised prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s measures to curb the target attacks. “The Bangladesh prime minister is very concerned over the recent killings, but she is taking necessary measures.”
Earlier, speaking at the reception programme, Abhijit said he has come to Bangladesh on a personal tour.
“Before I embarked on Bangladesh tour, I met the president, Lok Sobha speaker and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. All of them asked me to convey the message to the Bangladesh government that India is with Bangladesh,” he said.
He went on saying, “They want Bangladesh to inform India about any of its problem whenever it will arise.”
The son of Indian president said India “wants to stay beside Bangladesh as a friend, not as a big brother.”
Talking about the recent killings, he said, “Arson attacks will be launched…threats will be issued, but it does not mean that everything has fallen apart. Bangladesh is making progress and this problem will be solved when the development will be ensured.”
He went on saying, “One or two people are killed in such incidents when it happens in Bangladesh or India, but as much as 50 people are killed when it happens in the United States.
